Trenchless methods
Sewer line repair and replacement in Sarasota: the cases a liner cannot handle
Most sewer lines in Sarasota can be renewed without digging, but not all. Collapsed sections, bellies full of standing water and pipes with no way in still need a shovel or a bursting rig. This page covers those cases, how the digging is kept small in wet Florida sand, and what replacement involves.

When the no-dig answer runs out
Trenchless lining and bursting handle the great majority of sewer failures in Sarasota, and this site is largely about them. But a camera inspection sometimes shows one of a few conditions that no liner or bursting head can correct: a pipe that has collapsed flat, a belly where the line sank into settled fill and holds a standing pool, a joint offset so far the camera cannot pass, or a lateral with no cleanout, no accessible end and no way to get a tool in. Those conditions call for conventional repair, which means exposing the pipe. The skill lies in exposing as little of it as possible and in handling the water that fills every hole dug in Sarasota County.
Spot excavation in wet sand
A spot repair exposes only the failed section. The technician locates it from the surface using the camera's transmitter and marks it. The crew cuts a small opening, in sod where possible, and digs to the pipe. In Sarasota the hole fills with groundwater as it goes down, so a pump runs the whole time and the walls are shored or sloped, since saturated sand will not stand on its own. The failed section is cut out, new PVC is set on compacted bedding at the correct grade, and the connections are made with shielded couplings. The hole is backfilled in lifts and compacted, and the surface is restored. A liner or sectional repair then covers the rest of the line if it needs it, run straight through the new piece.
Fixing a belly
A belly is the most common reason for a spot dig in Sarasota. The fill under a lateral was placed loosely, a wet season washed fines out of it, and the pipe settled a few inches over a run of ten or twenty feet. Water and solids stand in the low spot, the line backs up repeatedly, and jetting clears it only until the next time. The fix is to expose that run, remove the pipe, bring the trench bottom up to grade with compacted bedding, set new pipe with a continuous fall, and check it with a level and a camera before backfilling. Lining is then an option for the remainder of the line.
Replacing the lateral
When the yard lateral is beyond saving, which in Sarasota usually means Orangeburg, crushed clay under a driveway, or a line undersized for the house, the choice is between pipe bursting and open-cut replacement. Bursting pulls new HDPE through the old pipe from two pits and is the first choice where the run is straight and the depth is manageable. Open-cut is used where bursting cannot go: very shallow pipe, a lateral that crosses other utilities too closely, or a run with bends. Either way the new pipe is sized for the house and the connection at the main is made under a right-of-way permit.
Re-piping under the slab
The hardest case is cast iron under a slab that has gone past lining: collapsed under a bathroom, say, or so riddled with holes that the sand has washed in and plugged it. Replacing it means saw-cutting the slab along the route of the drain and its branches, removing the iron, setting new PVC on bedding, pressure testing, backfilling and patching the concrete. Floors over the cut are replaced afterward. It takes several days to a couple of weeks depending on how many branches are involved, and most owners in Sarasota choose it only for the sections that truly cannot be lined, lining the rest from the same openings.
Protecting what is above the pipe
Every dig in Sarasota is planned around what sits on top. Access openings go in lawn rather than through pavers or a pool deck; where hardscape must come up, pavers are lifted and numbered for reset. Irrigation lines crossing the trench are cut and repaired as part of the job. Voids left by years of sand washing into a leaking pipe are filled so the surface stops settling. Utility locates are called before any excavation, and the installer pulls the plumbing permit and the right-of-way permit as the work requires.
Paperwork and the next step
The record from a conventional repair is the same as from a trenchless one: before and after video, a written scope with footage marks, the closed permits and a written warranty on the new pipe and any liner installed with it. Background on liner standards and installer verification is at the CIPP reference site and installer registry, and this contractor's verified registry entry is at the registry profile for Superior Plumbing Maintenance LLC. Questions we hear about sewer line repair & replacement
Why can't a liner fix a belly in my Sarasota sewer line?+
A liner takes the shape of the pipe it is installed in. If the pipe has sagged into settled sand and holds standing water, the liner will sag the same way and hold water too. Correcting a belly means exposing that section, re-bedding it on compacted material at the right grade, and setting new pipe. Only that section is dug.
What happens when a trench is dug in a high water table?+
The trench fills with groundwater, often within minutes. The crew pumps it with a sump or a well point, shores the walls so the wet sand does not slump, and works quickly. This is why spot excavations in Sarasota are kept as short as possible and why the rest of the line is handled trenchless wherever it can be.
Does a re-pipe through the slab mean replacing all the flooring?+
Only along the pipe route. The slab is saw-cut in a strip, usually a foot or two wide, following the drain and its branches. After the new pipe is set and tested, the strip is backfilled and the concrete patched. Flooring over the strip is replaced; matching tile or terrazzo is often the owner's separate contract.
Who repairs the part of the lateral under the sidewalk or street?+
In most Florida jurisdictions the owner is responsible all the way to the main, including the right-of-way portion, and the utility owns the main. Work there needs a right-of-way permit from the city or county, a utility locate, and often a utility inspector present for the connection. The installer coordinates all of it.
How do I choose between spot excavation and full replacement?+
Count the defects on the video and look at the pipe between them. A single collapse in an otherwise sound line gets a spot dig with the rest lined. A lateral that is crushed in several places, made of Orangeburg, or undersized gets replaced, by bursting where the run allows and by trenching where it does not. The scope should justify the choice with footage marks. Estimates are free; call now.
